Giving Day impact for palliative care

Giving Day impact for palliative care

Last year, the palliative care ward at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital raised an incredible $21,215 on Giving Day! And we’re thrilled to share the impact of their efforts.

Nurse Unit Manager and Giving Day champion Sue McArdle said the funds helped purchase four new mattresses and two recliner chairs, plus supported a mosaic art project to benefit patients.

“The patients are very comfortable with the new mattresses. As they are lighter than previous ones, they are easier for staff to manoeuvre too,” Sue explained.

She said the two chairs were electric recliners, that can also be moved easily between patient rooms.

“They’ve been a real benefit. Patients love sitting outside in them, and families appreciate having a comfortable option when they are sitting all day or staying overnight,” Sue said.

Funds were also directed towards a creative project, a mosaic art initiative led by Central Adelaide Local Health Network art therapist Gabby Wright.

Patients, families and staff have been working together to create four handcrafted mosaic tables for the garden areas.

“So far, we’ve completed one table which has been decorated with flowers,” Sue said.

“It’s beautiful and it’s already being enjoyed by patients and their families.”

Giving Day 2025

Seeing the positive impact from their efforts, Sue and the team are excited for this year’s Giving Day. They have a new fundraising goal of $27,000.

“There was a huge buzz on the day last year. We had great involvement from everyone, and we want to replicate the same energy again this year,” Sue said.

The team hope to replace more mattresses and purchase more recliner chairs. The rest of the funds will be determined with the help of Central Adelaide Palliative Care Service, ensuring the support goes exactly where it’s needed most.

“We really want the money to be spent thoughtfully, in ways that will have the most impact.”

We look forward to updating you on the team’s success!
