The amazing team at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s (TQEH) palliative care ward raised an outstanding $21,215 on Giving Day!
In a big group effort, the ward was joined by the rest of Central Adelaide Palliative Care Service, including the community team and the consult liaison service teams both at TQEH and Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Nurse Unit Manager Sue McArdle said it was a joint effort combining the teams plus inpatients and their families, staff and their families and friends, and also neighbouring wards and colleagues at TQEH.
“It was a really fun day. Everyone got involved and we’re grateful to have the contributions from ours and other teams,” Sue said.
“We had some very generous donations from patients, families and friends, and we just made a day of it. Everyone was excited to raise funds and watch our donations increase over the course of Giving Day and pass our goal of $20,000. It was a huge effort by all.”

THRF Group – Palliative Care’s Supporter Engagement Officer Jo Overbeek and Sue celebrating the team’s achievements.
The team aims to put the funds towards replacing mattresses for patients and to contribute to a memorial tree out in the garden.
“Our current mattresses, which were generously donated by The Hospital Research Foundation Group, are a number of years old and in need of replacing,” Sue said.
“We hope to purchase new pressure relieving mattresses that also provide comfort. Some of our patients spend all their time in bed because they can’t get up and comfort is extremely important. If they can be on these mattresses right from the start, it will make a big difference to their quality of care.”
“The fact we surpassed our fundraising goal and can purchase these for our patients is a great feeling.”
Registered Nurse Min Chang agreed: “Everyone was so generous, and it really reflected how much palliative care is like a community. Everyone came together and enjoyed the day for our patients. It was very inspiring.”
Thank you so much to the whole team and everyone for their incredible efforts!
